Luke’s Place offers comprehensive and current information regarding community services and resources for the purposes of providing timely and useful information and referrals to women and service providers. The centre may be accessed via telephone, email contact or in-person by scheduled appointment.

The Luke’s Place Resource Library is available to clients of the agency and community service providers and legal professionals who register as members of the Centre. The library houses approximately 550 titles in various media including; books, articles, reports, research studies, newsletters, information booklets, videos and audiocassettes. Most items may be signed out for a period of three weeks. Some resources are for reference only. The following is a listing of subject matter covered:

  • Child Support – including Federal Child Support Guidelines

  • Custody and Access - including supervised access, child exchange, custody and access with domestic violence issues; Special Joint Committee on Child C&A and briefs to and concerns about; law reform; changes to Divorce Act; custody and access assessors/assessments

  • Community – community responses and protocols; Durham Region-related reports, studies and services

  • Divorce and Separation

  • Family Issues – parenting, child care, family issues

  • Government – Government initiatives, programs and services

  • Legal – the law, legal issues, family law, legislation, changes to legislation, case law, Legal Aid, Court systems, procedures and forms, stalking and criminal harassment; gender equality in the justice system; women’s access to justice/law reform, etc.

  • Marginalized women - includes cultural issues, First Nations women, rural women, immigrant and refugee women, women with disabilities and deaf women, lesbian women, women in conflict with the law

  • Mediation and ADR (alternative dispute resolution methods)

  • Offenders/abusers

  • Professionals – legal or health professionals/medical or mental health professionals, teachers/educators – best practices, guidelines, handbooks

  • Relationships, self- care, health and personal growth

  • Sexual Assault/Sexual Abuse

  • Social and Public Policies - Social Issues – the women’s movement, poverty, employment, education, some gender-related material

  • Impact of violence on children
